COLLEGE: Big Ten to realign

The Big Ten announced new division alignments for 2014 and nine-game league scheduling starting in 2016.

Rutgers and Maryland, who will join the Big Ten in 2014, will compete in the East Division along with Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State and Penn State. The West will consist of Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Purdue and Wisconsin.

Michigan State 6-foot-10 forward Adreian Payne said he would return for his senior season.

NHL: Lottery draw tonight

The Panthers have the best odds of winning tonight’s NHL draft lottery. Fourteen teams, including the Devils, that missed the playoffs have a shot at the No. 1 selection.

The Avalanche fired coach Joe Sacco a day after the team missed the playoffs for the third straight season. … The Stars fired general manager Joe Nieuwendyk after four seasons without a playoff appearance.

MLB: Price in spat with ump

David Price, who struck out nine in the Rays’ 8-3 win over the White Sox, exchanged words with umpire Tom Hallion as Price walked toward the dugout after throwing his last pitch. After the game, Price said Hallion swore at him. Hallion called Price a liar.

John Lackey returned from the disabled list and pitched six solid innings for the Red Sox in a 6-1 win over the Astros. … Jason Bay slugged his second homer of the year in the Mariners’ 2-1 win over the Angels. … Russell Martin homered twice in the Pirates’ 9-0 win over the Cardinals. … Clayton Kershaw (3-2) retired 18 consecutive batters and struck out 12 in the Dodgers 2-0 win over the Brewers. … Miguel Cabrera’s three-run homer helped the Tigers beat the Braves 8-3, finishing off a three-game sweep.

GOLF: Park wins in Texas

Top-ranked Inbee Park shot a bogey-free 4-under 67 to win the inaugural North Texas LPGA Shootout by a stroke over Carlota Ciganda in Irving, Texas.

Jeff Sluman and Brad Faxon combined for a 7-under 65 to win the Liberty Mutual Insurance Legends of Golf by one shot in Savannah, Ga.

TENNIS: Nadal reigns in Spain

Rafael Nadal won the Barcelona Open for the eighth time, defeating Nicolas Almagro 6-4, 6-3 for his fourth title of the year. … Maria Sharapova beat Li Na 6-4, 6-3 to successfully defend her WTA Porsche Grand Prix title in Stuttgart, Germany. … Francesca Schiavone beat Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-1, 6-3 in the Grand Prix SAR final in Marrakech, Morocco.

soccer: Beckham red-carded

David Beckham was ejected yesterday as Paris Saint-Germain moved closer to clinching the French league title with a 1-0 victory at Evian.

Tottenham’s Gareth Bale became the third person to be named by his peers as English Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year in the same season. The only other players to have won both awards in the same season were Andy Gray in 1977 andRonaldo 30 years later.
