First ‘Godzilla’ trailer roars online

The last attempt to make an English-language Godzilla film resulted in a movie remembered for little more than its failure to live up to the hype and a soundtrack that featured a cover of David Bowie’s “Heroes” by Bob Dylan’s son. Not exactly the legacy you want for a phenomenally expensive blockbuster.

Because of this, fans of the world’s most famous kaiju have been weary of next year’s “Godzilla.” But based on the apocalyptic first official teaser trailer for director Gareth Newman’s film — especially the moment when we hear the monster let out its trademark shriek — there should be less to worry about this time around.

Despite its two plus minutes length, the clip provides precious little information about the movie’s plot, but it’s pretty clear that the monster’s decision to destroy San Francisco is going over poorly with those who managed to survive.

What the trailer does offer, though, is a glimpse at the film’s massive cast — which includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, Ken Watanabe and Juliette Binoche — and its dark tone. Whether or not the film is a success remains to be seen, but it looks unlikely to anger fans as much as Roland Emmerich’s 1998 take on the monster did.

“Godzilla” is set to stomp its way into theaters on May 16, 2014.
