Merion 2013: U.S. open second round rewind

JOYOUS SPOILS

D.A. Points (pictured) will miss the cut today, but leaves with at least one thing to remember after holing out an iron shot from the right rough on No. 1. On the first hole of his second round, Points popped one out from about 130 yards and one-hopped it in for an eagle 2.

THEM’S THE BREAKS

With his club cocked and ready to fire for a second shot from the fifth fairway, Carl Pettersson looked down to see his ball get hit by a stray tee shot from another hole. Pettersson luckily didn’t swing through as the errant ball hit by Brandon Crick bounded away. Pettersson got to replace his ball without penalty, and Crick played his without penalty from where it ended up.

KEY NUMBER

4 Of Tiger Woods’ 78 career PGA Tour wins, just four have come following an over-par first round, through three of those came at majors. He also never has won a major when over par after 36 holes. Woods shot 3-over 73 in the first round and finished two rounds at 3-over.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“I certainly didn’t think 15-under was going to win because it was soft. This is a tough course, and it’s obviously showing that you don’t need a course to be ultra long to make it difficult.”
