Deeper staff cuts at Star-Ledger

The cuts at the Star-Ledger, New Jersey’s largest newspaper, were deeper than many anticipated.

Rich Vezza, publisher of the Star-Ledger, confirmed that 167 people will be cut under the plan revealed last week that will see a new company formed, called NJ Advance Media, that will handle much of the sales and editorial for the paper and the website NJ.com.

The cuts include about 40 people out of a newsroom of 156 — about 25 percent. The paper was losing around $15 million even after gaining concessions and downsizing from its unionized employees last year.
