Cubs manager says he’ll keep an eye on Pineda’s palm

Cubs manager Rick Renteria said he intends on keeping an eye on Michael Pineda’s pitching hand Wednesday night after the controversy that arose during Pineda’s last start. Television cameras showed a brown, sticky substance on Pineda’s palm for the early innings of his outing against the Red Sox.

“A lot’s been made of that,” Renteria said before the Yankees and Cubs began their doubleheader Wednesday. “I guess if it’s something that we should keep our eye on, it would be foolish for me to say that we wouldn’t be looking for it.”

Pineda removed the substance after the fourth inning against the Red Sox, and Major League Baseball reached out to the Yankees about the incident, but didn’t discipline Pineda.

“Obviously, a lot was made of it,” Renteria said. “If we see it, if it’s noticeable, if it’s something that affects the outcome of how he’s able to command the pitches.”
