Private buses could be used if LIRR unions strike

The MTA plans to use private buses to move Long Island commuters if LIRR workers strike over the summer, according to a proposal released Monday.

The buses would be used as an emergency service to help commuters get to work. Riders would also be encouraged to work from home and carpool.

The LIRR unions shot down an MTA offer last week of 11 percent raises over six years, bringing the railroad closer to a strike, sources said.
City bus drivers have vowed not to act as scabs if there is a strike.

The proposal said it would not be practical to use city buses since they are needed to serve 2.6 million riders a day.
The MTA board will vote on the issue Wednesday.
