Woodson on QB bubble

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Andre Woodson or Rhett Bomar?

Or none of the above.

That could be the way it shakes down when the Giants put their final roster together. They went with only two quarterbacks last season and may do so again, with one of the youngsters staying in the organization on the practice squad.

Woodson, a member of last year’s practice squad, got the call first in last night’s 38-27 preseason loss to the Patriots. His second pass was intended for Mario Manningham, but Woodson never saw safety Brandon McGowan, who made the interception and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown.

A bit later, Woodson came back to hit Manningham for a 35-yard gain. He returned in the fourth quarter to hit Derek Hagan and Ramses Barden on key passes on a drive that ended with a Lawrence Tynes field goal. Still, Woodson (6 of 19, 98 yards) wasn’t impressive.

“In practice I was out there doing a fabulous job,” Woodson said. “The games just didn’t seem to work out.”

Bomar did not get into the game until only 5:53 remained. He went 2 of 7 for 40 yards and had one interception.

One possible injury issue looking ahead: Rookie WR Hakeem Nicks left in the third quarter with a hip flexor. He did not sound concerned.

“Just a mild hip flexor, just being cautious with it,” Nicks said. “I’ll be back in practice. It’s not that serious.” . . . CB Terrell Thomas went into the locker room in the second quarter to have X-rays taken of his neck. The results were negative. “I was good to go back,” Thomas said. “I was fine.”

C Adam Koets left in the third quarter with a sprained ankle . . . Strange play late in the first half. Terrence Nunn returned Tynes’ kickoff 49 yards before Tynes pushed Nunn out of bounds. Tynes then spun Nunn down to the ground for a 15-yard personal-foul penalty.

TE Darcy Johnson did not help his cause at all. He dropped the first pass thrown to him and then was called for holding on a kickoff return . . . Rookie S Travonti Johnson was called for unnecessary roughness when he crushed WR Greg Lewis after the ball had gone by.

Rookie Will Beatty from UConn got the start at LT in place of David Diehl, who missed his first Giant game because of patella tendinitis. Diehl promised to be ready for next Sunday’s opener . . . LB Antonio Pierce, after missing two games with a sore foot, was in the starting lineup . . . Chase Blackburn started at weak-side linebacker in place of Gerris Wilkinson.
