TOXIC TOWER

The New York City fire department says smoke seen at a condemned tower across from ground zero was due to a welder’s torch.

A Fire Department spokesman says that a call about smoke at the former Deutsche Bank building came in about 6:20 p.m. on Wednesday, but that it turned out to be smoke from the torch.

He says the situation is under control.

The 40-story building was heavily damaged in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks when the World Trade Center’s south tower collapsed into it.

Its removal has been plagued by legal battles, the discovery of human remains, several accidents, and a 2007 fire that killed two New York City firefighters.
