ID THIEVES’ ARMY OF SWINDLERS

A Bronx counterfeiting ring used 950 “soldiers” to con banks around the city out of millions of dollars, prosecutors said yesterday.

Ringleaders Jasper Grayson and James Malloy used their sprawling crime network to steal the identities of 500 New Yorkers, produce thousands of counterfeit checks and swindle banks out of big money, Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said.

“By fraudulently cashing and depositing the counterfeit checks, the defendants stole over $1.4 million,” the DA said.

The scam was helped along by employees at various banks, including tellers, who would pass on photocopies of valid customer checks and information on customers in return for cash payments, Morgenthau said.
