First Couple’s visit to NYC

President Obama will personally give his regards to Broadway this weekend during a private visit to the city with First Lady Michelle – his first trip to the Big Apple as the commander in chief.

During the whirlwind stay, the First Couple will take in tonight’s performance of “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone,” an August Wilson play showing at Belasco Theater, according to reports from theater sources.

The show is set in a Pittsburgh boarding house in 1911 and “examines African Americans’ search for their cultural identity following the repression of American slavery,” according to one summary.

The White House declined for security reasons to give any specific details about plans surrounding the Obamas’ date in Manhattan beyond simply confirming that they will take in a little New York nightlife.

“They are going to New York City for a personal visit,” spokesman Bill Burton said.

The president lived in New York briefly during the 1980s as a student at Columbia and made frequent visits to the city for fundraisers and other political events during the campaign.

Michelle Obama made a trip to the city earlier this month, visiting the U.S. mission to the U.N. and appearing on “Sesame Street.”
