GREEK RECIPE GOES FLAT IN SECOND TRY

BEWARE Greek-Canadians bearing comeback vehicles.

At least if they’re Nia Vardalos, who quickly disappeared from sight after improbably turning 2002’s “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” into the most successful romantic comedy of all time.

Notably thinner, less awkward and a lot less charming, Vardalos is back with “My Life in Ruins,” a desperate, crass and probably futile attempt at replicating the earlier movie’s fluke success.

Instead of playing a travel agent, she’s an American history professor-turned-tour guide in Athens.

She copes with an international group of tourists — boozing Aussies, obnoxious Americans, snooty Brits, larcenous seniors — who were clichés when they were immortalized in the vastly funnier “If It’s Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium” 40 years ago.

Vardalos’ unmarried character is trying to get her mojo back, something the movie never possesses in the first place.

As in “Greek Wedding,” Vardalos is provided with a longhaired love interest — a bus driver named Poupi Kakis (Alexis Georgoulis) who, you guessed it, has a nephew named Doodi.

Just to give you a taste of the movie’s sophisticated idea of wit, it also makes fun of gay men.

Second billing goes to a slumming Richard Dreyfuss.

He plays Irv, a sarcastic Jewish widower who has a threesome with a pair of lusty Spanish divorcees and an encounter with his late wife (Rita Wilson, one of the producers). He also apparently returns from the dead, courtesy of post-production reshoots.

This limp souvlaki of a movie — the closing-night attraction at the Tribeca Film Festival — is served without any noticeable enthusiasm by director Donald Petrie (“Grumpy Old Men”).

The only compensation factor is lots of gorgeous Greek scenery.

Greece provided major funding for “My Life in Ruins” — even though it’s depicted as a country where merchants are crooks and hotel showers don’t work.

As for Vardalos, she’ll get another shot at a comeback with “I Hate Valentine’s Day” next month.

MY LIFE IN RUINS No “Mamma Mia!” Running time: 95 minutes. Rated PG-13 (sexuality). At the Chelsea, the Kips Bay, the East 85th Street, others.
