NYPD feud over search of beaten cop’s car

The NYPD sergeants union wants the head of the department’s Internal Affairs Bureau fired because IAB investigators searched the car of an off-duty cop brutally beaten outside a Queens diner on Sunday.

The union on Tuesday demanded Chief Charles Campisi be canned for treating Sgt. Mohamed Deen like a suspect. They not only rifled through the BMW, but also interrogated his wife while he was in a medically induced coma recovering at Jamaica Hospital on Sunday, the union said.

“He overstepped the scope of his duties,” Ed Mullins, president of the Sergeants Benevolent Association, said about Campisi. “He harassed the wife and family by questioning the sergeant’s character. And his actions could hurt the criminal case.”

The union claims Deen’s wife was questioned once in the hospital after the vicious beating, which was caught on cellphone video. When IAB tried to question her a second time, the union stopped the investigation.

“It is clear that Sgt. Deen was the victim of a brutal assault,” they said in a statement. “No allegation of misconduct was ever made against him.”

The NYPD declined to talk about the car search, but said it is standard procedure to interview witnesses to a crime that results in a member of the department being severely injured.

Deen, 40, has recovered enough to start speaking to relatives, who have been keeping a hospital vigil.
