Wright likes Mets new GM

Sandy Alderson hasn’t been on the job long, but he already has at least one fan on the Mets’ roster.

“Everyone I’ve talked to has had great things to say about him,” David Wright said of the new general manager in an e-mail. “I’ve heard he’s an extremely bright man and his baseball track record speaks for itself.”

No general manager in Wright’s tenure with the team has a resume that approached Alderson’s, who already has had success with a World Series championship in Oakland in 14 years with the team.

Earlier in the month, when the Wilpons announced that Omar Minaya was being relieved of his duties, team COO Jeff Wilpon surprised some people when he refused to rule out the possibility of trading the third baseman if the new general manager recommended it.

At the time, Wright said he understood Wilpon’s comments and hoped to remain a part of the organization.

During Friday’s press conference at Citi Field, Alderson was asked about Wright’s status with the team, and though he opted to not talk about Wright directly, he made his affinity for keeping players like the third baseman a part of the team.

“Home-grown players are very important, especially from the fans’ standpoint,” Alderson said, later adding. “I’m not sure anybody is untouchable. On the other hand, there are a few players who represent a core for this franchise and you’ve gotta be careful about trading those players.”

Alderson also said he “fell in love” with some of the players who won for him in Oakland and “probably didn’t turn over the roster when we should have.”

Nevertheless, Wright said he clearly is energized by the first piece of the new regime.

“I’m really looking forward to working with him,” Wright said. “And I’m excited for what he brings to the table.”

The chances of Hisanori Takahashi remaining a Met increased yesterday, when the deadline for the team to either sign the lefty or give him his unconditional release was postponed from today to Friday.

Takahashi switched agents last week and is now represented by Arn Tellem. On Friday, Alderson praised the reliever.

“He did a nice job out of the bullpen,” Alderson said. “We’re going to look at it hard.”

If the Mets don’t reach an agreement with Takahashi, they will not be able to resign him until May 15.
