Rex’s ‘Rob’ look steals show

It was a priceless moment. Jets coach Rex Ryan, poised to begin talking about Sunday’s showdown with his twin brother, Rob, the defensive coordinator with the Browns, excused himself from his press conference yesterday.

After a couple of minutes, he returned — dressed as his brother Rob, wearing a Browns cap with a long-haired wig and a Browns T-shirt with a pillow in.

Playing off his father, Buddy, being accused for placing bounties on players, Rex, pretending to be Rob, said, “I’m placing a bounty on my brother’s head.”

With that, several reporters played into the act, asking Rex questions as if he were Rob.

Asked about Rex, he said, “I think Rex is a great coach, a great person. He’s very handsome.”

Asked why the hair in the wig was blonde and not gray, Rex said, “I’m trying to get a head-coaching job, so I’m dying it a little bit.”

Asked about Mark Sanchez, Ryan said, “I think he’s well-coached. My brother has done a great job with Mark Sanchez.”

Rex than proceeded to torch his brother with more trash talk, something that’s sure to be a continuing theme this week.

When the Jets players heard about Ryan’s act, they were amused, but hardly surprised.

Defensive tackle Trevor Pryce, who played under Ryan in Baltimore and was signed this year, recalled the first time he met Rob Ryan and how blown away he was at how identical they are.

“We played against Cleveland [last year] and I’m walking to the locker room and I hear, ‘Hey Trev, come meet my wife,’ ” Pryce said. “It was right after Rex had left Baltimore and we were all going through Rex withdrawal and I’m like, ‘Rex?’ It was Rob. but he sounded exactly like Rex.

“Twin brothers are twin brothers, but it is literally like talking to Rex, my God,” Pryce added. “I kept staring at him and was like, ‘That’s Rex.’ I couldn’t stop looking at him.”

Pryce has been through a “Buddy Bowl” before, playing under Rex in Baltimore when the Ravens played the Raiders with Rob as the defensive coordinator.

“I think more than they want to beat each other, they enjoy playing against each other,” Pryce said. “And their dad, from what we’ve been told, says the first one of them that plays zone coverage is out of the will.”

Rex called Rob “probably the most creative” defensive mind in the league who “probably breaks down the opponent better than anyone I’ve ever been around.”

He said he’s warned offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer that Rob “will know your tendencies from two years ago.”

Rex said he tried to hire Rob to come to the Jets.

“We don’t even have a job [opening], but we put in for him every year and [get] denied,” he said.

Rex said he believes his success as a head coach will help Rob become one soon.

“It should,” he said. “We’re very similar type people. The fact that Woody Johnson took a chance on me, that’s all [Rob] needs is a guy that has the courage to maybe just hire a football coach. That’s who he is. He might not have the corporate image, but I know one thing, he’s a great coach.”

This will be the brothers’ first meeting with Rex as a head coach. They met twice as coordinators and Rex won both times.

“So I’ve got to keep that trend going,” Rex Ryan said.
