Obama set to deal on taxes

WASHINGTON — President Obama wants to play “let’s make a deal” on the expiring Bush tax cuts, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is digging in.

Speaking in Seoul yesterday before jetting to Japan for the last leg of his Asian trip, Obama didn’t rule out temporary extensions for the wealthy, so long as he gets his way on cuts for the middle class.

“My No. 1 priority is making sure that we make the middle-class tax cuts permanent,” Obama said.

“I continue to believe that extending, permanently, the upper-income tax cuts would be a mistake.”

Pelosi was less accommodating, calling the cuts “too costly.”
