Girls basketball roundup: Carey’s big night gives Luken, Hill opening win

The Joe Luken Era and Kelsey Carey’s sophomore season got off to a rousing start at St. Joseph Hill.

“She is very intense and athletic,” said Luken, who is in his first season. “She was skying and they had some big girls.”

The forward scored 26 points and grabbed 19 rebounds to lift visiting St. Joseph Hill to a 68-50 win over Curtis in non-league girls basketball Friday night. Lauren DeForte also had 26 points and connected on three 3-pointers. Brittany Spoto added 10 points and seven steals. Luken, who was formally the junior varsity coach, took over for the retired Michael O’Connor. Curtis is 2-1.

“I sat her down and said just keep shooting,” Luken said of DeForte’s slow start. “She came in and boom, boom, boom.”

St. Joseph by the Sea 62, St. Edmund 20: Lisa Lavara and Jillian Silvestri each scored 14 points for St. Joseph by the Sea (1-0) in non-league. St. Edmund in 0-2.

PSAL CLASS AA

South Shore 61, James Madison 23: Jasmine Odom had 12 points, four assists and three steals to lead South Shore (3-1, 3-0) in Brooklyn AA Group 1. Aliyah Cooley had nine points, three assists and four rebounds in her season debut (sports hernia). Tiffany Jones led Madison (0-3) with nine points.

PSAL CLASS A

New Utrecht 54, Fort Hamilton 47: Danielle Amorello had 22 points, including seven 3-pointers, Nicole Potenzone had 12 points and Jacquana Brown added 11 for New Utrecht (2-1) in Brooklyn A South. Fort Hamilton is 1-1.

Bayard Rustin 45, Thurgood Marshall 23: Brianna Johnson had 17 points to lead Bayard Rustin (1-2) in Manhattan A West. TMA is 0-4.

FIELDSTON TOURNAMENT

Staten Island Academy 59, Rye Country Day 51: Bethany Claps scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Mayana LeGrande had 18 points and 13 boards for SIA (2-0) in the Fieldston Tournament semifinals. Sam Avis and C.J. Bernieri each add six points. The Tigers advance to play host Fieldston in the final 5 p.m. Saturday.

Fieldston 31, Convent of the Sacred Heart 15: Chelsea Dale scored 12 points and connected on three 3-pointers for tournament host Fieldston (1-1). Caroline Katz had 10 points and Julissa Peguero added 10 rebounds. The Eagles play Staten Island Academy 5 p.m. Saturday in the final.

PSAL CLASS B

RFK 31, Pathways 23: Julia Toth had 19 points to lead RFK (2-0) in Queens B East. Pathways is 0-2.
