CHSAA boys basketball roundup: McClancy pounds Spellman in Bro. Arnold opener

Jonathan Veloz netted a game-high 18 points and Jaleel Feurtado and Patrick Modzelewski scored 14 points apiece to pace Monsignor McClancy to a 71-39 win against Cardinal Spellman in the opening round of the Brother Arnold Memorial tournament in East Elmhurst Friday night.

Kenny Ruiz scored 16 points for Cardinal Spellman (1-2), which takes on St. Dominic in the consolation bracket Saturday at 4:45 p.m. McClancy (2-2) meets Blessed Sacrament in the second semifinal at 8:15 p.m.

St. John’s Prep 63, Cathedral Prep 34: Charles Jones had 18 points and Ryan Yearwood added 14 for St. John’s Prep (2-2) in the opening round of the Brother Arnold Memorial Tournament Friday afternoon. The Red Storm takes on St. John the Baptist in the semifinals at 6:30 p.m., while Cathedral Prep, which was led by Chris Beetz’s 15 points, meets St. Edmund Prep in the first consolation game at 3 p.m.

Cardinal Hayes 78, No. 9 St. Francis Prep 69: Amadou Sidibe had a game-high 21 points and Fadil Yacoubou added 20 points to lead Cardinal Hayes (2-1) Friday night. Glyne Straker had 19 points and George Hatzioannides netted 13 for No. 9 St. Francis Prep (3-1), which went 9-of-17 from the foul line.

No. 10 Mount St. Michael 71, Kellenberg 48: Peter Aguilar scored a game-high 34 points and Malik Gill added 18 for No. 10 Mount St. Michael (3-0) Friday night. Rob Gomiela netted 15 points for Kellenberg (1-2).

St. John the Baptist 47, St. Edmund Prep 43: Keith Williams had 17 points and Will Fortune had 11 points for St. John the Baptist (4-1). St. Edmund Prep (1-1) was led by David Louison’s 17 points.

Blessed Sacrament 59, St. Dominic 53: Malcolm Covington scored a game-high 23 points and David Rucker had 10 for Blessed Sacrament (1-2), while St. Dominic’s was paced by Tim Divietri’s 13 points.

Regis 72, St. Agnes 62: Billy Carballeira had 28 points and 11 rebounds, Dan Morris had 21 points and Marlon Brewer had 14 points and four rebounds for Regis in the opening round of the Peg Duggan tournament at Horace Mann Friday. The Raiders (2-1) opened the second half on a 12-0 run and shot 14-of-19 from the foul line to take control of the game. St. Agnes falls to 0-5.

Xavier 76, LaSalle 51: Eddie Sullivan had 14 points, Ahrman Burke scored 13 points and Patrick O’Grady netted 10 to lead Xavier (2-1) against LaSalle (1-2) Friday night.

Salesian 58, Iona Prep 47: Kevin Punter erupted for 27 points and seven assists and Jason Alleyne had 16 points and eight rebounds for Salesian (2-0) Friday night. James Gallery scored 15 points for Iona Prep (1-1).
