Shot castle owner: God looked out for me

The Long Island political power broker who was shot in the face at his castle residence thanked his family, medical team and God in a video released Monday.

“I got a break. I guess God looked out for me. He always looked out for me. I’m a very spiritual person. I always pray. And I thank God for everything that I got,” said Gary Melius, who was attacked Feb. 24 outside Oheka Castle in Huntington in what was believed to be an attempted hit.

The bullet struck him above his left eyebrow and traveled under his skin without penetrating the skull until it exited behind his ear.

Wearing a clear patch over his left eye and a bandage on the left side of his head, Melius didn’t get into the specifics of the attack.

“I have a lot to say, but I’m not going to say much,” he said at the start of the seven-minute video.

Melius, 69, praised his family, including wife Pam, for caring for him and keeping Oheka Castle, which is also a hotel, restaurant and catering hall, operating while he was in the hospital.

“My family has been absolutely supportive in taking care of every minute for me. I love them all. My family has bathed me, nursed me, supported me. There is nothing they haven’t done for me. My wife is unbelievable,” he said.

“Oheka is alive and well. There hasn’t been a blip. Although I haven’t been around, everything seems perfect.”

He also praised the doctors and nurses who cared for him at North Shore University Hospital and the police investigating the attack.

He said he was on the road to a complete recovery.

“I would say that I am a very fortunate man. I’m healing, getting better [and] looking forward to just starting over again,” he said.

Melius was released from the hospital last week and vowed to help cops hunt down the gunman.

Melius was getting into his Mercedes in the valet area of his estate at around 12:30 p.m. Feb. 24 when he was shot by a mystery man.

Video shows a Jeep following a black sedan into the parking area before the shooting. A man is seen getting out of the Jeep and firing at the sedan’s driver’s-side window.

Cops said at least three shots were fired before the shooter and the Jeep’s driver took off.

The Queens-born Melius has been a longtime player in Long Island politics, contributing to both Democrats and Republicans.

Oheka Castle, built in the 1920s, is said to be the second-largest private home ever built in the US.
