Ted Cruz to chuck Canadian citizenship

WASHINGTON — Texas Sen. Ted Cruz says he’s ditching his Canadian citizenship in the latest indication he’s preparing a run for president.

“I have retained counsel that is preparing the paperwork to renounce the citizenship,” the Republican told the Dallas Morning News.

Cruz, 43, was born in Alberta to an American mother and Cuban-born father — a circumstance that made him both a US and Canadian citizen.

Cruz said he learned about his dual citizenship from a newspaper report only this summer.

Cruz is a hard-charging Tea Party favorite who earned a national following even as he infuriated much of DC by staging a budget filibuster linked to ObamaCare, where he read from Dr. Seuss’ “Green Eggs and Ham” on the Senate floor.

He’s considered a top-tier candidate for 2016 after jaunts to Iowa and New Hampshire.
