No TSA ‘nudes’

No nudes is good news at the airport.

Transportation Security Administration officials are getting set to yank the controversial body scanners that gave security screeners X-ray-style peeks of passengers’ nude bodies.

The TSA is closing out its $5 million contract with California company Rapiscan Systems, because it could not meet a June deadline to fix its software to eliminate the nude images.

TSA has also had problems with the speed of the Rapiscan machines. It says devices by other companies screen passengers more quickly.

The Rapiscan machines should be completely gone by June, the TSA says. Many have already been removed from Kennedy, La Guardia and other large airports.

Rapiscan machines use “backscatter” technology, which European airports have junked over worries of subjecting passengers to too much radiation.
