Jets hire Lee as QB coach

The Jets quarterback rebuilding project took another step yesterday when the team hired a new quarterbacks coach.

The team hired David Lee, according to a source, to help fix the most important position on their team. Ironically, Lee is credited with bringing the Wildcat formation to the NFL when he worked for the Dolphins. The Jets especially failed trying to integrate Tim Tebow into their offense last year in the Wildcat.

The Jets interviewed Lee last year for the position but he ended up taking the same job with the Bills. Lee replaces Matt Cavanaugh, who held the job for four years. The Jets let Cavanaugh’s contract expire.

Lee inherits a situation with Greg McElroy and Mark Sanchez likely to return because of his cap number. Tebow is expected to be released.

One person who likely won’t be coming to the Jets is Michael Vick. There had been speculation Vick might become a Jet with them hiring Marty Mornhinweg as

their offensive coordinator. Vick and Mornhinweg spent the past four years together with the Eagles. But a source yesterday confirmed what The Post reported in December that neither Vick nor the Jets is particularly interested in one another.

An ESPN report said Vick and Mornhinweg did not see eye-to-eye this season.

The Jets will be Lee’s third stop in the AFC East. He spent three seasons with the Dolphins under former head coach Tony Sparano and then last year with the Bills. While in Miami, Lee is credited with bringing the Wildcat with him from Arkansas.

The Jets brought Tebow in last year to run the Wildcat,

but barely used him. Coach Rex Ryan is a fan of the formation, and the Jets could use it with wide receiver Jeremy Kerley more this year. Kerley ran it in the final two games of last season.
