‘Moms’ Night Out’ is consistently average

Consistently stale but not altogether unpleasant, “Moms’ Night Out,’’ focuses on the attempts of clean-freak homemaker Allyson (Sarah Drew) to spend a night out with her gal pals, whom she knows from church (Logan White and a hunched-over, pursed-lipped Patricia Heaton).

The first half of this mommy-comedy could be charitably deemed “gently amusing.” But it’s hard to find new laugh riots in kids trashing a house, and there’s no evidence anyone tried.

Late in the movie, country star Trace Adkins appears; no one should ask him to play Hamlet, but he’s a genial presence.

The second half devolves into a bog-standard Hollywood climax. And as both the mommies and the mugging become more frantic, directors Andrew and Jon Erwin ratchet up the Biblical content.

Which should naturally lead to a payoff, and (spoiler warning) here it is: Jesus loves you. Which is nice to know, even for us heathens, but as Mother’s Day presents go, a spa certificate is easier to cash in.
