VP, Mike open fire

WASHINGTON — Vice President Joe Biden yesterday touted President Obama’s gun-control agenda in firearm-loving Virginia and over dinner with firearm-hating Mayor Bloomberg back in DC.

Joe and Jill Biden hosted the billionaire mayor and his girlfriend, Diana Taylor, White House officials said. Bloomberg is helping to bankroll a national campaign to undermine the National Rifle Association’s opposition to Obama’s proposals.

In Virginia, Biden never mentioned the proposed ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammo clips, the most ambitious part of the president’s plan. Instead, the vice president focused on establishing universal background checks.

“We have an obligation to act, not wait,” he said after meeting in Richmond with officials from Virginia Tech University, where a student shot dead 32 people in April 2007.
