NBA: Buss is hospitalized

Lakers owner Jerry Buss has been hospitalized with cancer, the Los Angeles Times reported. The 79-year-old Buss has spent time in the intensive care unit at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

The law firm that assembled a report critical of NBA union head Billy Hunter’s leadership said it won’t publicly release further information about its research because the government is investigating the matter.

Hunter was placed on indefinite leave and his future could be voted on by players at a meeting during the All-Star weekend that begins today in Houston.

NFL: RG3 on the mend


Robert Griffin III has a legitimate chance to start the 2013 opener, Redskins officials said yesterday. The quarterback had reconstructive knee surgery last month.

The Eagles agreed on a two-year contract with quarterback Dennis Dixon, who played at Oregon when coch Chip Kelly was the Ducks’ offensive coordinator. Dixon, who will compete against Michael Vick and Nick Foles. spent last season on the Ravens’ practice squad.

NHL: Karlsson has surgery

Senators defenseman and Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson had season-ending surgery to repair his left Achilles after the tendon was cut by a skate blade during a game against the Penguins.

Canucks centerManny Malhotra, the former Ranger, will miss the rest of the season. The team gave no reason.

Eric Fehr scored two goals as the Capitals won their third straight game beating the Lightning 4-3. … Rene Bourque scored 2:10 into overtime and the Canadiens beat the Panthers 1-0.

ETC: Serena milestone

If the 31-year-old Serena Williams reaches the semifinals of the Qatar Open by beating seventh-seeded Petra Kvitova, she will return to No. 1 for the first time in 2 1/2 years. Chris Evert was No. 1 in 1985 while just shy of her 31st birthday.

The Rockies acquired infielder Reid Brignac from the Rays in exchange for a player to be named and cash considerations.
