Giants ‘snap’ back to inept for one play

Zak DeOssie was on the verge of a panic attack, having one of those “Ever want to get away?’’ moments. Steve Weatherford was stunned. Tom Coughlin was speechless.

The wide ranges of emotions were a result of a stunning DeOssie long snap that went 10 feet over punter Weatherford’s head that resulted in a freebie Eagles’ touchdown with 4:11 remaining in the Giants 15-7 win Sunday in Philadelphia.

The Giants survived the gaffe, but it provided a temporary scare.

“I don’t know what to say about the snap from center; I don’t think I’ve ever seen him do that — not even on the practice field,’’ Coughlin said.

“I’ve never seen it before,’’ DeOssie agreed. “I knew right when it left my fingers. It’s demoralizing. I have one job to do — put it in the punter’s hands — and when I don’t do it, it eats away at me. I’ve had hundreds of big-time snaps.’’

With 36 seconds remaining and the Giants clinging to the one-possession lead, DeOssie had to snap one more time to Weatherford and did so without incident.

“You would assume it’s difficult [to go back out there], but I knew exactly what I did wrong, so I knew how to fix it,’’ DeOssie said. “The ball got away from me and I was thinking about blocking before the snap. That’s my first mistake. Unfortunately it happened when it did.’’

Weatherford joked he could only have caught the errant snap — which was recovered by Najee Goode after the Giants punter was unable to kick the ball out of the end zone for a safety — “If you could have given me LeBron James’ height and a step ladder.’’

“He’s, in my opinion, the best snapper in the league, especially when it comes down to covering,’’ Weatherford said of DeOssie. “I’m sure he’s very frustrated but the same thing with me, there’s been punts this year I haven’t been real satisfied with, to say the least. When we needed him to have a snap at the end of the game for that last punt he put it right on me. Just one of those things where it came out funky, kind of an anomaly.’’
