12-year-old girl survives 30-foot plunge down elevator shaft

A 12-year-old girl fell 30 feet down an elevator shaft in a freak accident at her Soho building on Friday — but amazingly suffered only a broken arm, cops said.

The girl was with her baby sitter when she hit the up button in her building on Crosby Street near Broome Street at 3 p.m., cops said.

The doors opened before the elevator arrived — and the girl fell down the shaft into a sub-basement, according to law-enforcement sources.

A good Samaritan walking past the building saw the baby sitter crying and pointing down the elevator shaft and came to her aid.

“I thought she was dead,” said Ahmed Aly, 33. “I used my phone to show her someone was there . . . I asked her, ‘Are you OK? Are you alive?’ ”

Then he heard the girl begin to cry from two floors below.

Witnesses quickly called 911 while Aly began to ring all the door bells, telling residents not to use the elevator.

As the sound of sirens neared, Aly told the girl, “You hear the firefighters? They’re here for you. Don’t panic. Don’t move.”

“OK, OK, OK,” the girl said. Seconds later, her mother arrived and burst into tears.

“[The mother] was so scared,” said Aly.

FDNY rescued the girl with a basket, authorities said.

She was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where she was being treated for a broken arm and injuries to her shoulder, cops said.

The Department of Buildings is investigating.
