CUNY Law grads bar and away improved

Now they got their law in order.

The recently faltering CUNY School of Law has staved off potential sanctions to its program by catapulting its students’ passing rates on the New York bar exams to the highest point in school history.

Nearly 84 percent of CUNY Law graduates passed the bar exam last year — leaps and bounds above the class of 2011’s success rate of just 67 percent.

The Long Island City school’s aspiring legal eagles hadn’t fared so well the year prior either, when 72 percent of them passed the challenging exam.

Last year’s impressive results pole-vaulted CUNY Law’s pass-rate ranking from last in the state to seventh place — and just shy of the state average pass rate for first time test-takers of 85 percent. More importantly, the improvement helped the school avoid possible sanctions from the American Bar Association — which can be triggered by three straight years of pass rates below 75 percent.

“We are pleased with our 2012 pass rate,” said Dean Michelle Anderson. “In 2012, we developed a privately funded bar mentoring program for recent graduates that we think made the difference, and we plan to continue to enhance our bar support program for future classes,” she said.
