Kolb out as Cardinals QB, could the Jets have interest?

Another largely unproductive quarterback hit the scrap heap Friday, when Kevin Kolb was released by the Cardinals.

How long before new Jets general manager John Idzik pounces and adds the injury-plagued Kolb to the list of subpar QBs brought in to “compete” for Mark Sanchez’s starting job?

Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg was Kolb’s offensive coordinator in Philadelphia when Kolb was taken by the Eagles in the second round of the 2007 draft. Kolb had some success as Donovan McNabb’s backup, and became the Eagles’ starter when McNabb was traded in 2010.

Friday’s move reportedly saved Arizona $7 million in salary cap space. Kolb, 28, was due to make $9 million in 2013, but had started just 14 games and thrown just 17 touchdowns in his two seasons in the desert.

* The Patriots bolstered their 29th-ranked pass defense when they reached agreement with five-time Pro Bowler Adrian Wilson Friday night, according to the player’s agent. The former Cardinals safety brings an intimidating presence to the New England secondary, as evidenced by his 25.5 career sacks.

Age could be an issue for Wilson, who is 33 and entering his 13th season. Nevertheless, he has missed just two games the past five seasons.

The day wasn’t a total win for the Pats, though. While they were kicking the tires on one ex-Jet, defensive end John Abraham, they lost another when running back Danny Woodhead landed a two-year deal from the Chargers.

* Packers fans may want to take a ride up to the Wisconsin-Minnesota border to set up a road block if this exodus goes on much longer. Wide receiver Greg Jennings became the latest member of the Packers to leave Green Bay to join their NFC North rivals.

Jennings’ arrival in the Twin Cities gives the Vikings the No. 1 receiver they badly needed after trading Percy Harvin to Seattle. Jennings joins safety Darren Sharper, kicker Ryan Longwell and, of course,Brett Favre as high-profile Packers to defect to Minnesota.

* It looks as if the 49ers are no longer considering relocating Revis Island to San Francisco Bay.

The NFC champs, who once upon a time expressed interest — just how much remains unclear — in trading for Darrelle Revis, are said to be engaged in serious discussions with both cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha and safety Charles Woodson.

Asomugha also has generated interest from the Saints, where Rob Ryan is the defensive coordinator. Ryan and Asomugha were together in Oakland, where the cornerback made the reputation he failed to live up to in Philly.

* Ed Reed had a good feeling about the Texans, but the free agent, last seen celebrating the Ravens’ Super Bowl win, left Houston without a deal in place despite spending two days talking with the team.
