Standing up to the terror

* In a week in which terror and death dominated the news, it became painfully obvious how vulnerable we are, even at sporting events. My heart goes out to those who were injured and to the families of the fallen. I can’t shake the image of the two terrorists walking among the unsuspecting throng knowing they were about to perpetrate murder and believing they were going to get away with it. No matter how you look at it, the real target was our way of life, and realizing that, maybe we can come together on at least one issue, namely preserving our values. I hope they run the Boston Marathon next year, and it is bigger and better than ever. I think that is the most powerful message we can send to those who wish us ill.

* Kudos to the Yankees for the special tribute they paid to the city of Boston on Tuesday evening. Again the organization comes through showing the class they’re made of.

Marvelous Harv’

* There’s a great deal of excitement in New York these days, with the Nets and Knicks in the NBA playoffs, the Rangers and Islanders likely to join the Stanley Cup chase and the surprising injury-riddled Yankees winning game after game. But the real treat for New York fans is getting the opportunity to watch the Mets’ future superstar Matt Harvey pitch! A bright light now shines at Citi Field!

So long, Summerall

* Pat Summerall, who died this week, was a great sportscaster even before he teamed with John Madden. I remember when he worked with Tom Brookshier. It was great listening to two guys talking football who were talking football and not trying to be the smartest guys in the stadium. Thanks, Pat.

PATRICK GRANT

Brooklyn

* Pat Summerall who was rather low-key and restrained, was not only informative, but was someone you could always trust and rely on. His talents were widely recognized by his colleagues, who inducted him into multiple sportscasters Hall of Fames and gave him several awards. Summerall had perhaps the smoothest, steadiest sports voice around. He will be missed.

Cruz in control

* I’m a Giants fan and glad Victor Cruz will be remaining in blue. But the fact teams wouldn’t give up an untested first-round pick for Cruz is puzzling. Just ask any Giants fan about Ron Dayne: No. 1-pick, Heisman Trophy winner. We know how that turned out. Cruz is your loss and our gain.

Shoot and score

* In his first nine games with the Blue Jackets after leaving the Rangers and coach John Tortorella’s “prevent” offense, Marian Gaborik had three goals and four assists after having nine goals and 10 assists in 35 games for the Blueshirts.
