WATERTOWN, Mass. — Modern technology gave cops this amazing picture of alleged Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev as he cowered in a 24-foot boat stored outside a Watertown home.
Massachusetts State Police yesterday released the image, taken from a helicopter that hovered over the scene as officers surrounded Tsarnaev, 19, Friday afternoon.
They were able to see right through the tarp and tell officers on the ground where Tsarnaev, still bleeding from wounds suffered in a wild rolling gun battle with cops early Friday morning, had stashed himself.
Once authorities had located the suspect, a police vehicle was sent in with a boom to inspect the boat and remove the tarp in case there were any explosives in the area.
“There were some warning shots fired to see if there was any movement inside the boat,” local resident Joe Morrissey said.
“They had some camera that could see infrared. They could see something moving.”
Cops were first alerted to Tsarnaev’s possible hiding spot by Dave Henneberry, a member of the local yacht club who stepped outside his house for some fresh air after authorities lifted a lockdown of the entire Boston metropolitan area.
Henneberry noticed a few odd things about the boat stored in his back yard: The straps on the boat’s tarp looked cut, a neighbor said. And when he looked inside, the neighbor said, Henneberry saw a pool of blood and what appeared to be a body.
He rushed inside and called authorities.

Police quickly flooded the area, and frightened residents were left to wonder what was happening down the street as volley after volley of bullets were heard all over the usually quiet neighborhood.
“They shouted at me to shut the door and lock the door,” Morrissey said.
Cops opened fire when Tsarnaev appeared to reach for a weapon, sources said. Then they used a flash bang grenade to stun him.
“There was so much screaming — ‘Get out! Get out!’ ” described neighbor George Pizzuto, who took in the boat owner while authorities closed in on his house next door.
Tsarnaev was hauled away by ambulance as local residents applauded local cops, cheering, “Nice work, guys! Thank you!”
