Thieves ‘angling’ for mail

Brooklyn thieves have gone fishing — for your mail.

The brazen crooks are stealing items directly out of street mailboxes by lowering in glue mousetraps on a string and pulling up their criminal catch of the day, The Post has learned.

Prospect Lefferts Gardens resident Bob Treuber first noticed the trend when he spotted mounds of torn correspondence on the sidewalk near a Rogers Avenue mailbox in January.

“I was finding it everywhere,” he said. “Just piles of mail on the ground.”

A post-office source said that those who go “mail fishing” are hoping to land anything from cash and checks to Netflix DVDs and video games.

“We are aware of the complaints and are investigating it,” said postal spokeswoman Donna Harris.

Treuber said he has found every manner of correspondence strewn in the area, including tax returns, birthday cards and bills.

The postal source said the phenomenon is spreading throughout Brooklyn. Mailbox theft was popular in The Bronx several years ago, and the crime is making an unexpected comeback.

“What worries me is that people were going through the box,” said resident Jon Takiff, 37, who said several items of his mail have not been delivered. “I hope they find out who is doing it.”
