Inside Pitch

HERO

With the threat of a demotion looming, both Ruben Tejada and Ike Davis delivered for the Mets — and for themselves. Tejada, who left with a quad injury in the ninth inning, ignited the team’s five-run first-inning with a leadoff single, scoring the night’s first run, and Davis smacked a two-run single and had two hits on the night.

ZERO

Yankees righty David Phelps was a disaster, retiring just one batter while getting smoked for five runs (four earned) on four hits and two walks in the first inning, putting the Yanks in an early hole. It was the shortest outing by a Yankees starter in 52 games this season.

OVERSHADOWED

With the bases loaded and one out in the first inning, Marlon Byrd hit a tailor-made double play ball to Jayson Nix at third. Nix flubbed it, allowing everyone to be safe and keeping the inning alive. If he had turned it, the Mets would have led 2-0 after the first inning instead of 5-0.

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT

‘It stinks. But I’m not going to let it kill me.’ — Yankees starter David Phelps, who gave up five runs in one-third of an inning
