6th grader lights girl’s hair on fire

A sixth-grader boy lit his gal pal’s hair on fire in Brooklyn today, sending her to the hospital with serious head and neck burns, authorities said.

The FDNY received a call at 3:20 p.m., reporting that a 14-year-old girl had severe injuries from the terrifying incident at Bildersee Playground.

The boy and girl had been walking near East 81st Street and Flatlands Avenue, next to IS 68, witnesses and officials said.

That’s when he took out a lighter and was flicked it too close to the victim’s hair extensions, which caught on fire, law enforcement sources said.

“The boy had lighter, flicked it, it caught her hair,” said a 14-year-old girl who witnessed the incident

”She didn’t react at first until it touched her scalp. She started screaming.”

The young couple — identified as Daysaun Rigby and Brianna Silver — seemed to be on friendly terms right before flames broke out.

“He was walking with his arm around her,” the witness said. “The kid had a lighter, his arm was around her, he was flicking the lighter, waving it back and forth, she moved into it.”

The witness added: “He helped put it out, he threw his book bag on top of her.”

Cops have interviewed the boy and it wasn’t immediately clear if this was an accident or criminal act, law enforcement sources said.

Investigators said witnesses have reported the two arguing shortly before Brianna’s hair caught fire.

She’s listed in stable condition at Staten Island University Hospital, with her serious – but not life-threatening – wounds.

“After dismissal, there was an altercation between a male and a female student at a park, adjacent to the school. A sixth-grader had a verbal altercation with an eighth-grader,” according to a Department of Education statement.

“The sixth grader reportedly took out a lighter from his pocket and set the other student’s hair extensions on fire. She was taken to Staten Island University Hospital’s Burn Unit. The school is reaching out to the parents. Disciplinary action is pending.”
