Yankees’ Robertson falls short in All-Star vote

David Robertson had admitted that being in the bullpen with Mariano Rivera for the closer’s final All-Star Game would mean a lot to him. But the Yankees’ superb set-up man didn’t get enough votes to make it happen.

Robertson lost the AL Final Vote derby yesterday, falling to fellow set-up man Steve Delabar of the Blue Jays. The other three candidates were all relievers as well — the Tigers’ Joaquin Benoit, Koji Uehara of the Red Sox and the Rangers’ Tanner Scheppers.

And though Dodgers phenom Yasiel Puig topped Shane Victorino’s 1999 vote record of 15.6 million, the young outfielder did not make the team either. Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman won the NL slot with a new record of 19.7 million votes.
