Matt Harvey: Why I want to rehab alongside Mets teammates

PORT ST. LUCIE — Matt Harvey said he probably won’t know until next week whether he will remain in Port St. Lucie for his rehab from Tommy John surgery or stay with the team.

The Mets can keep Harvey in Port St. Lucie for 20 days once they break camp, but after that would need his consent, and Harvey has said he wants to rehab with the major league club.

“I’ve made it pretty clear I would like to stay with the team and learn from them, and learn from the other pitchers and have an opportunity to learn the league better,” Harvey said.

The right-hander has been playing catch at 60 feet and said he expects to pitch for the Mets this season. Team officials have been more cautious, saying they do not expect Harvey to return in 2014.
