Hosp bad-blood probe

The feds paid a visit to Coney Island Hospital yesterday investigating the death last month of an 84-year-old woman who was given the wrong blood type during a transfusion, officials said.

“Two surveyors from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services were at Coney Island Hospital as part of a routine follow-up that occurs when a hospital reports a transfusion error,” said Ian Michaels, a rep for the New York Health and Hospitals Corporation.

The state Department of Health is also investigating, spokesman Jeffrey Hammond said.

Kings County Hospital is testing blood and other blood products needed for transfusions at Coney Island Hospital. Kings County will also screen and determine the type of all blood samples from patients at Coney Island.

Transfusions that give a patient the wrong blood type can cause the body to attack the new red blood cells, causing a reaction that can lead to a fatal kidney shutdown.
