OLYMPICS: Former skier Johnson declines treatment

The family of former Olympic downhill champion Bill Johnson says he is dealing with a life-threatening infection that has attacked his major organs and that he no longer wants to go through treatment.

Hospitalized since June 29, Johnson’s mother said in a phone interview the one-time daredevil skier refuses a feeding tube, even though it hurts to swallow. Johnson wants to return to an assisted living facility in Gresham, Ore., where the 53-year-old was living before the illness.

Manchester United rejected Chelsea’s ambitious bid to sign striker Wayne Rooney.

The 27-year-old Rooney has pushed for a move since expressing frustration about his lack of playing time.

ETC.: Cuban pitcher defects, sets eyes on majors

Cuban pitcher Misael Siverio told a Spanish-language newspaper he defected to the U.S. and will try to make it to the majors.

Siverio was part of the Cuban national team that traveled to Iowa for an exhibition game against a collegiate all-star team from the U.S. But he apparently left the delegation at some point after it arrived in Des Moines on Tuesday.

Roger Federer rallied to beat Daniel Brands, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, at the German Tennis Championships in his first match since his second-round loss at Wimbledon last month.

Federer served three aces in the opening game but still lost his serve and ultimately the set to the German. The former No. 1 broke once in the second set and twice in the decider.

Chris Froome edged Alberto Contador to win the 17th stage of the Tour de France and extend his overall lead.

The U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Federation said it has found no reason to sanction Olympic hopeful Lolo Jones for her role in a nightclub altercation that involved the stepdaughter of one of the sport’s Hall of Famers.

Manhattan College landed two recruits for 2014 in Samson Usilo and Samson Akilo of Nazareth High School. The 6-foot-4 Usilo is one of the area’s top leapers and averaged 20 points per game last year, while Akilo is a 6-foot-8 post presence. — Zach Braziller
