Kate-baby ‘odd’ balls push luck

LONDON — Down the stretch they come — and it’s Alexandra in the lead!

A royal-watcher outside St. Mary’s Hospital in London yesterday shows a bookmaker’s odds for the sex, name and imminent birth date of Prince William and wife Kate’s first baby.

The media and onlookers have been camped outside the hospital — where the future king or queen will be born — since July 1, dubbing the vigil the “Great Kate Wait.”

The suspenseful buildup has been a boon for bookmakers. The gender of the baby is believed to be unknown to the royal couple, but bookies are leaning toward a girl. Alexandra is the favorite among girls’ names, followed by Charlotte, Victoria, Diana and Elizabeth. James and George are the top picks if it’s a boy.

Prince Charles’ wife, Camilla, said this week that everyone was “just waiting by the telephone,” and she hoped the baby would arrive by the end of the week.
