Starbucks getting into the tea business

Starbucks is turning over a new tea leaf.

The coffee titan is opening a new “tea bar” in New York City on Thursday, in hopes of brewing up profits through the caffeine-laced hot beverage.

Teavana Fine Teas + Teavana Tea Bar — on Madison Avenue near East 85th Street on the Upper East Side — will also serve a variety of snacks, sweets and flatbreads.

The Seattle-based java giant last year purchased the chain of 300 Teavana stores, which are mostly in shopping malls.

Even though Starbucks is known for coffee, CEO Howard Schultz said the company has always taken pride in its tea sales.

“Tea has been a part of Starbucks heritage since 1971, when we were founded as ‘Starbucks Coffee, Tea and Spices,’ and this new store concept elevates the tea experience in the same way we’ve done for coffee,” Schultz said.
