This week’s couple: A pair with different tastes

Diet is important for everyone, even on a blind date.

Unfortunately for Alex, 29, who eats everything put in front of him, his date Jax, 26, is a vegan. So flirting by feeding each other bites of their meals at the buzzing New American resto The Fourth wasn’t a sound strategy. Despite different tastes, did they find something special in each other off the menu?

He said:

I showed up at the restaurant early and played games on my phone until Jax arrived. She arrived on time.

Jax doesn’t look like the ladies I typically date, but she’s hot in a New York City artsy way. We drank bourbon, which helped us relax.

The Fourth was the nicest place I’ve ever been on a first date. I had salmon, but Jax is a vegan, so although we shared a little of our dessert, I was generally eating things she couldn’t eat.

I can’t think of what we didn’t talk about. The Fourth has a spiral wooden-bed sculpture on display — we talked about that at length. I was interested in her art projects, even though she seemed to think I’d be bored by them.

At the end of the date, we hugged and said our goodbyes. I’d go out with Jax again — maybe somewhere a little more divey. Our date was great.

She said:

Alex was already at the Fourth when I arrived, which was nice. He was well-groomed and looked very put-together.

I’m a vegan, but Alex was cool about it, and the Fourth was accommodating. I had a bourbon cocktail and spaghetti, which is hard to eat in a classy way, but delicious.

Conversation with Alex was easy. We could go from talking about quantum physics to making “Arrested Development” references. Througout the night, Alex came across as smart and thoughtful.

We stayed at the restaurant for hours, until we called it a night. We exchanged business cards, but didn’t make plans to hang out again. He’s not really my type and the vibe felt platonic, but I had a good time.
