Bono does spot-on Bill Clinton impression

If this music thing doesn’t work out, Bono could have a great, second career — as a Bill Clinton impersonator!

The U2 front man did a remarkable, spot-on impression of the 42nd president at a Clinton Global Initiative event in New York on Tuesday.

Clinton was late to the stage, so Bono jumped from his seat at the end of the panel into the former president’s empty chair and launched into spot-on and funny Bubba mimic.

“When I first met Bono,” the Irish singer said in Clinton’s gravelly down-home accent, drawing immediate laughs from the audience, “he walked into the Oval Office and I actually thought it was a member of his own road crew, [He] wasn’t really dressed right.”

Bono as Clinton continued: “I actually, I felt like the rock star on that occasion. But together, you know, we did this Drop the Debt [NGO] thing and my God there’s 51 million children going to school in Africa ‘cause of the Drop the Debt and that’s pretty good, is that right?”

Bono as Clinton also talked up CGI’s work on AIDS.

“Then I had Chelsea torture me about all this AIDS stuff,” the “With or Without You” singer said. “And you know what? We got to work on it and, you know, the foundation did incredible work. And right now we got affordable AIDS drugs for everybody all over the world!”

After about 2 minutes of the shtick Clinton walked up behind Bono and the startled rock star got up and announced, “It’s David Letterman” before sheepishly handing the mic to Bubba.

Clinton had appeared on Letterman’s show Monday night. He took the impromptu mocking by Bono in stride.

“I must be really easy to make fun of,” an amused Clinton said.
