Deadly pileup on Cross Bronx

A man was killed after he rear-ended a tractor trailer on the Cross Bronx Expressway early Tuesday and then lost control of his car, sparking a series of collisions involving four vehicles, authorities said.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was driving a late-model black Infiniti G-35 sedan southbound in the right lane of the Cross Bronx Expressway, near Westchester Avenue, at around 3:45 a.m. when he crashed into a UPS tractor trailer, police said.

The UPS truck then sideswiped a second tractor trailer, which fishtailed from the center lane, cops said. That’s when a second Infinity hit the UPS truck, cops said. The driver of that sedan allegedly fled on foot before police arrived.

The driver of the first Infinity was taken to Jacobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, police said. A 23-year-old woman riding in his passenger seat suffered cuts and bruises and was taken to the same hospital in stable condition, cops said.

No arrests have been made and police are still looking for the driver of the second Infinity.

The accident was one of at least two serious smash-ups that snarled traffic for hours ahead of gridlock warnings because of the United Nations General Assembly.

Police are also investigating an accident on the Brooklyn Queens Expressway, near Atlantic Avenue, in Brooklyn around 4:38 a.m. That collision sent one victim to Lutheran Hospital, authorities said. The victim’s condition was not immediately clear.
