Rivera Ave. renaming gains momentum

The Post’s push for a Rivera Avenue is picking up Mo-mentum.

Two key City Council members say they’re now on board with renaming River Avenue outside Yankee Stadium for retiring ace Mariano Rivera.

Bronx Councilman Joel Rivera, a lifelong Yankee fan, said Tuesday that he would propose a bill for the renaming to honor the closer, who was honored by fans Sunday.

And Manhattan City Councilwoman Melissa Mark Viverito, whose district will include the designated Bronx street beginning next year, said she wouldn’t oppose the name change.

They join a chorus of local pols who want to see Rivera’s name on a street sign. Mayor Bloomberg, Council President Christine Quinn, Republican mayoral candidate Joe Lhota and even a pair of Yankee-hating Mets fans on the council have all endorsed the idea.

Rivera rides into the sunset this week after a brilliant run as baseball’s most unhittable closer — and one of the game’s true class acts.

“From what I know about his career, he has an unblemished record as a natural athlete and has been a role model for youth in The Bronx,” said Joel Rivera. “I actually had him throw the first pitch at one of my Little Leagues a few years back.”

Mark-Viverito said she would support the change “if the community board wants it.”
