Milder weather in the forecast for Super Bowl Sunday

The dreaded Ice Bowl of 2014 is not going to happen.

“When you look at all the disaster scenarios that were thrown out there in the weeks before the Super Bowl — ice storms, snow storms — it’s going to end up a boring, la-di-da day,” said AccuWeather meteorologist Dave Dombek said.

The three-day deep freeze should end Friday and a warming trend should take over, he said.

“We’re looking at temperatures above freezing Friday, maybe even reaching 40,” he said. The skies will be dry but cloudier than Thursday. Saturday will be warmer, with “maybe a little rain,” Dombek said.

Earlier this week forecasters were warning of a wintry mix of snow and rain from Saturday night to Sunday morning.

And Super Sunday “will be our mildest day of the next week,” Dombek said.

AccuWeather projects a daytime high of 43 — but says it could get as high as 46. “I would figure at kickoff time it would be 36,” Dombek said.

A year ago, when the Feb. 2 high was just 29 degrees, some fans were predicting an arctic Super Sunday in 2014.

There will be a lot of clouds Sunday and perhaps a passing shower during the late morning and early afternoon, but just that.

“Not snow, just plain old rain,” Dombek said And mild northwest winds should be “not much of a factor in the kicking and passing game,” he added.
