Lawmaker wants US tanning-bed ban for under age 18

It’s time for the feds to throw some shade on teenage tanners, a Manhattan congresswoman says.

Rep. Caroline Maloney wants a federal law that would keep those under 18 from using tanning beds.

“We ban cigarettes for those under 18. We ought to ban these devices, too,” Maloney said Saturday at a City Hall event that drew about 20 people.

New York law already bars those under age 17 from patronizing tanning salons. People who are 17 and 18 can use tanning beds with their parents’ permission.

Maloney, a Democrat, says her nationwide tan ban would impose limits in 18 states — including Arizona and Virginia — that have no such laws.
