Man who bought Mother’s Day flowers hit by speeding car

A man who had just bought flowers for Mother’s Day was among five people injured Sunday morning when a speeding driver plowed into a parked minivan in the Parkchester section of The Bronx, witnesses and officials said.

After the smash-up, the rogue driver scrambled out his passenger-side window and attempted to flee on foot but was caught minutes later, authorities said.

The suspect had been speeding in his black Honda when he lost control of it in front of the Miguel Flower Shack at White Plains Road and the Cross Bronx Expressway around 9:15 a.m. and slammed into the parked van, which the flower customer had just returned to, police and witnesses said.

The perp ran from the scene, but cops caught up with him about two blocks away no more than 10 minutes later, cops said.

Five people — at least some of whom were in the parked van — were seriously hurt and rushed to Jacobi Hospital. All were expected to survive.

A woman who works at the flower shop told The Post she was outside and heard a huge bang before catching a glimpse of the suspect scurrying out of his car and away from the accident scene.

“The car half-flipped and caused the minivan to bump into the truck in front of it,” she said. “Then the guy who caused the accident…tried to get away. People gathered around and started watching. The people who were hurt stayed in the van until the ambulance arrived. They were saying they hurt their necks, and one guy was screaming about his back.”

The suspect received minor injuries. Charges were pending. Police have not released his name yet because he has not been formally charged. The names and ages of the victims have not been released.
