New magazine exec appointed at Rodale

Maria Rodale finally wrapped up the search for a new president of Rodale, which publishes Prevention, Men’s Health and Runner’s World.

He is Scott Schulman, a 13-year veteran of Dow Jones, who exited in July 2012 as the head of corporate markets group and earlier was publisher of WSJ.com.

Rodale, astonishingly, is claiming its ad pages were up more than 11 percent in the first nine months of 2013, even as most of the larger publishing companies were barely eking out gains and the industry as a whole was posting slightly negative numbers on the year.

When Maria Rodale first revealed that she was looking for new presdient and chief operating officer, speculation was that she would relinquish an active role in the company to the new executive. In Tuesday’s announcement, she insisted she would continue as an active CEO “focusing on broader strategic initiatives and company growth and vision.”

Interestingly, Schulman did not get the COO portion of the job as it was advertised when the search began last July.
