Preet Bharara under fire in India

Crusading Manhattan US Attorney Preet Bharara is under fire in his home country of India over suggestions that he’s trying to build a political career by prosecuting fellow natives of the Asian subcontinent, including Deputy Consul General Devyani Khobragade.

“Is Bharara targeting Indians?” asked an article Wednesday on India Today’s Web site.

In addition to the pending charges against Khobragade, reports cited last year’s headline-grabbing trial of Indian-born Rajat Gupta, the former Goldman Sachs director who was convicted of insider trading.

That case grew of Bharara’s prosecution of billionaire hedge-funder Raj Rajaratnam, born in what is now Sri Lanka.

A Bharara spokeswoman declined to comment.
