Where does Giants-Vikings rank among ‘MNF’ duds?

Are you ready for some poorly played football?

The Giants and Vikings will do battle in prime time Monday night, but neither deserves the bright lights or the national platform. Here is a look at some of the other Monday night stinkers:

  1. 1. 1-11 Chargers vs 3-9 Jets in 1975

Both starting quarterbacks would become Hall of Famers, but neither played like it on this night. Joe Namath threw two interceptions and Dan Fouts threw for 86 yards, but San Diego’s Rickey Young ran for 111 yards and a touchdown and made sure the Chargers never trailed in a 24-16 home win.

  2. 2. 1-9 Oilers vs 3-7 Giants in 1994

Jeff Treadwell’s 37-yard game-winning field goal at the Astrodome ended the Giants’ seven-game losing streak and started a six-game winning streak to end the season. Running back Rodney Hampton (pictured) ran for 122 yards in the 13-10 win. The Oilers suffered their seventh straight loss and would end up losing 11 in a row.

  3. 3. 0-4 Redskins vs 0-4 Cowboys in 2001

Washington scored the game’s only touchdown on Tony Banks’ 31-yard pass to Michael Westbrook, but Dallas kicker Tim Seder, whose kicking leg collided with a horse during pregame warmups, nailed a 26-yard, game-winning field goal as time expired in the Cowboys’ 9-7 win.

  4. 4. 2-8 Panthers vs 3-7 Eagles in 2012

Eagles running back Bryce Brown received his first start since high school — filling in for an injured LeSean McCoy — and ran for 178 yards and two touchdowns, but Cam Newton’s late 2-yard touchdown run (one of four total touchdowns) gave the Panthers a 30-22 win on the road.

  5. 5. 0-6 Giants vs 1-4 Vikings in 2013

Though both teams had winning records last season and both teams still possess dynamic offensive playmakers, the defenses have been their downfall, with the Vikings ranked 30th (31.6) in points allowed per game and the Giants last (34.8). The offense matches up two-time Super Bowl MVP and current interception leader Eli Manning against Josh Freeman, the Vikings’ third different starting QB of the season.

  6. 6. 4-9 Baltimore vs 3-10 Packers in 2005

In a box score that would blow many minds, Kyle Boller humiliated Brett Favre, throwing for 253 yards and three touchdowns, while Favre compiled 144 yards and two interceptions in the Ravens’ 48-3 beatdown in Baltimore.

  7. 7. 2-5 St. Louis Cardinals vs 2-5 Giants in 1983

In what remains the Giants’ worst season (3-12-1) of the past 39 years, Big Blue blew three different leads and ended up tying the Cardinals, 20-20, at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. The Giants were incredibly lucky to even tie, as Cardinals kicker Neil O’Donoghue missed three field goals in overtime, including a 19-yard attempt.

  8. 8. 2-5 Patriots vs 1-6 Baltimore Colts in 1972

One week after getting shut out for the second time in three weeks — a 23-0 loss to the eventual 17-0 Miami Dolphins — Baltimore forced three turnovers, including two interceptions by Patriots quarterback Jim Plunkett, to claim a 24-17 victory at Schaefer (Foxboro) Stadium.

  9. 9. 4-11 Falcons vs 4-11 49ers in 1999

Two dreadful teams put on one heck of a show, as quarterback Jeff Garcia nearly brought the 49ers back from a 24-point, third-quarter deficit, with 373 yards and two touchdowns. But Falcons quarterback Chris Chandler was equally impressive, throwing for 306 yards and three touchdowns.
