Workers plummet two stories in building collapse, 8 injured

Eight construction workers suffered serious trauma when the third floor of an East New York building they were working on collapsed, officials said.

The floor and the workers plummeted two stories to the ground during the terrifying free-fall around 1 p.m. Wednesday, the FDNY reported.

Firefighters were able to rescue all of the employees, some of whom were caught under debris.

The workers were rushed to Kings County Hospital and Brookdale Hospital. All were expected to survive, officials said.

The 93-year-old apartment building has had a history of violations in the past decade, with more than a dozen citations issued for unsafe construction, records from the Department of Buildings show. None of the violations were recent, however.

Records from 2011 show the vacant, three-story tenement had loose brick and other structural defects.
